Basilrathbone.net has just unveiled a new page dedicated to Rathbone’s troubling second wife, Ouida Bergere (or whatever he real name was).
basilrathbone.net/biography/ouida.htm
Go and check it out. Lots of info. I focused on this pic of Ouida in 1919, sitting in a huge car:
She would have been married to George Fitzmaurice at the time I think, and had just launched her short-lived multi-functional uber-agency for just about everything. That giant car is so Ouida isn’t it. Wonder if she ever actually managed to pay for it 😉
Thanks for sending this Neve, I thought it was very interesting and provocative.-Edward Nichols

Interesting that she set her sights on our guy while still married to George. And giving up acting after losing her voice, but was head scenarist, but how did she keep house, too? And if she retired to keep Baz’s house, why such a domestic staff? How much time really spent w/Cynthia,a child she had to have since she couldn’t have her own.Should’ve look after her daughter when she was ill for however long she was ill than live the high life.I’m sure other H’wood wives lived more conservatively than Weedy.I figured she wanted the LaLaLand life, and he put up with the demands for excess. He prob would’ve gone back for The Heiress, think he would’ve needed that stripe more than struggling for roles on the Grat White Way,and her trying to get him to star in whatever she wrote.Wish they had a way to see her play of Sherlock Holmes.

LOL “Troubling Wife” and all her strife.Too bad he prob didn’t seem able to act “bored” at home with the strife as he was accused of being bored well into the Shylock Holmes movies,”seeming bored in all but last 2″per criticals oh,critics.Still my fav Holmes.

And yet despite the fact that GITIB was def beneth both of them I love it! It sucsedes on the level that it was intended to.It is a good teen comedy, staring the usual ‘beach party’ set.[despite it’s lack of Frankie and Anette-or DeeDee as she was usualy called]it is goofy wacky and fun.If you have ever watched some of REALY low budget beach party flicks staring “?Whos that?I dont have a clue? But they cant act to save there lives”I think folks will find that Basil Boris and as always Harvey Limbeck make this movie fun. Harvey who as a little girl I would have def ridden behind on his sickle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Lembeck

Dosent look like a Damlier, first thought after a silver ghost, the 1919 seems to have had extra headlights on the fender top. Def not a 1919 Bugatti. Trying American cars with prestige Pos. a 1919 Duesenberg http://www.supercars.net/carpics/3173/1919_Duesenberg_ModelA1_small.jpg Next I tried a Aubrun Cord, beauty 6, orignal price about $1.600.00 bucks, but still struck out..Not totaly convinced but could be a 1919 Pierce arrow altho the headlights and seat don’t look quite right and no raidatior cap.The town I live in USED to have some realy great car shows like every weekend[and yes it realy DOES get anoying when the whole downtown is blocked off EVERY sat.]Now we have a real big one once a summer..you cant grow up around here with out seeing lots of beautiful classic cars.

She drives me crazy and I can’t help myself, bark, bark.Wonder if changes in Baz in40s were because he wished divorce and she hit him with everything she had, including over the top parties. Her clear jealousy as he gazed at Jen Jones on stairs, his friendships, prefering worn clothes, desire to get back to stage, female adoration.Spending could be coping mechanism, but not to the extreme.Just seem to get sharper images of their livesthe more I read.If he showed disdain for horror pics, why not his boredom at home.Had thought Cyn’s adoption was giving in to studio pressure due to some hushed scandal (affair or something). Why adoption for a couple near or in their 50s,as I believe OR was by ’39?Don’t think she wanted or had to have a child, she looked so uncomf holding Cyn,but Baz looks enchanted.

I checked the 1918/1919 model best pic I could find. http://autophotosite.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/1918_Rolls-Royce_Silver-Ghost_Double-Phaeton_1918-01-400×272.jpg such as solid hubcaps, dif style bumper, no spare tire. I will give her credit if she could drive that huge beast, rember no power stearing no power brakes.Wonder waht happend to cute Airdale? Dindnt have it when she wed Basil. Wonder if the doggy is her spare driver?

The car is a 1909 Marmon. (I put a caption below the photo on my Ouida page.) Basil wrote in his autobiography (page 56) that Ouida owned an Airedale (and a Greyhound and a German Shepherd) when he met her at that party in 1923.
