Hollywood Tours 1937

Marcia Jessen from BasilRathbone.net has very kindly sent The Baz these wonderful pdfs of articles advertising “Hollywood Tours.” Interesting to us mainly because amongst the delights offered the lucky tourists is a “cocktail party at Basil Rathbone’s home!” But almost as interesting is the glimpse of the culture of 1930s America. Fascinating to see the beginnings of present-day fear-marketing aimed at women. Warnings of the fire consequences of not being “dainty” enough, and post-Victorian coy recommendations for Kotex. And then, the culture shock of an ad aimed at “skinny girls”, promising they can “add five pounds!”

Anyway, enjoy, and download the full pdfs from the link below.

    Note:
The thing above is supposed to be a BUNNY….I won’t know how it looks ’til after I post this comment.

It seems that since neither Blackcatte nor Neve have added anything new to this site for over a YEAR, it must mean they are no longer maintaining or running “The Baz”. I’ve been patiently waiting and hoping things would change, but every time I check back in it’s the same. Even worse, there’s been NO explanation given as to WHY nothing’s been added.

    What HAPPENED???

Like Mikufan recently commented: “We need more Baz”!
I really MISS all the interesting photos, stories and insight that used to be shared on here each month—it was something I looked forward to—only a few of us remaining ‘hold-outs’ are even still commenting, anymore.

    This is SO SAD. 😦

PLEASE, PLEEEASE BRING BACK THE OLD “BAZ”—DON’T LET IT DIE!!!
We’re all starving for new stuff to see & talk about!

The Globe & National Examiner, scandal sheets were looking for classic actors we’d like to know more of-suggested our Baz to both. They actually do seem to be providing some tidbits about more classic actors now.Hopefully, someone familiar to us all doesn’t dispute whatever may be mentioned there about our Baz.Latest scandal states Camilla Parker-Balls & Prince Charles had a sonback in mid-1960s and he’s supposedly first in line before Wills & Harry-Camilla really rattling the Royals’ cages with her drinking, affair with a telly star, blackmailing attempts for a huge alimony, claims of Harry’s parentage.Should be enough outrage at the treatment of Lady Diana to shut Camila up.Hope she falls in a pile of horse manure!

I wanted to mention the passing of actress Maureen O’Hara, who died on October 24th.

She was such a SWEET person, and even into her 90s remained GORGEOUS! I saw her a few months ago being interviewed on TCM, about her friendship with fellow actor John Wayne and the different roles she played over her career. It was nice to see her looking well, although she needed to use a wheelchair in later years. I’m glad she died peacefully in her sleep at a good age (95), having lived a full and mostly happy life, as we ALL wish we could.

    Goodbye, Maureen.
Enjoy your new life in Heaven with all your friends and family! 🙂

    Hi, everyone. 🙂

Today is the 22nd anniversary of (my pal) Vincent Price’s death.
He’s probably enjoying the recent company of his dear friend Sir Christopher Lee, right now—as well as kicking his butt for living SO much longer (and healthier) than himself. 😉

    POST-BUTTE FIRE UPDATE:
Because we don’t qualify for FEMA assistance, some friends of ours started an online ‘fire-fund’ to help my boyfriend rebuild his log cabin & replace the equipment/tools he needs for his business. (Ironically, he cleans lots for wildfire prevention/reduction here in the mountains.) I sent out anonymous flyers to his customers, telling them about the fund. Several LARGE donations have been made in less than 2 weeks! People really care about him, and appreciate the services he’s provided them throughout the years. I don’t think he realizes how SPECIAL he is to others, and is humbled–and amazed–by their kindness.

      MIKUFAN—I’M STILL HERE!! 🙂

But, my boyfriend’s log cabin ISN’T….

Our second home and almost everything else on that property was DESTROYED by the Butte Fire, last Thursday. We were at our other house when it happened. When we realized how close the fire was to our place, there wasn’t enough time to get over there to save anything, so we lost pretty much EVERYTHING we owned. There’s nothing left of our cabin or garages but the warped metal roofs lying flat on the ground. My boyfriend lost his lifetime collection of tractors, vehicles, tools, and personal possessions. He built the cabin and all the buildings/garages by HAND, which took him over 10 years. (A couple trucks, tractors & small sheds survived.) Our outdoor cat probably died in the fire, but we’re not sure—I HOPE SHE’S OKAY.

ALL my CDs, cassette tapes I’ve recorded since the ’80s, my collection of books (+ the 2 irreplaceable Vincent Price biography books—NOOOO!!!), photos, letters & cards from friends (including EVERY one from the actors and their families I’ve been pen-pals with since the late ’90s: the letter from Edward Hardwicke and the ones from Shemp Howard’s granddaughters Sandie & Jill, Emil Sitka’s son Saxon and Boris Karloff’s daughter Sara), are GONE. Also, most of my boyfriend’s cute letters/holiday & Birthday cards he’s given me for the past 12 1/2 YEARS we’ve been together, and the scrapbooks I made of my friends and I on ALL our Disneyland trips since 2001….plus, the souvenirs I got there. I have basically NOTHING of any value to me left, besides the belongings that are here at this other house….and NONE of that stuff really matters all that much, compared to those PRICELESS photos/papers/books/recordings I’ve lost. 😦

Some of my old journals, cassettes and photos I brought from my parents’ place are here, and a small box of friends’ letters/cards from several years ago. AT LEAST I HAVE THOSE.

I’m going to email Lucy Chase Williams and ask if she has any original copies of her book about Vincent that I could purchase as a replacement. I’ll also write to Saxon Sitka and ask for some photos of his dad and the Three Stooges to replace all the ones he’s sent to me over the years. I don’t know Sandie & Jill’s current mailing addresses, and can’t find an email (on their website in honor of Shemp), so I may see if Saxon can obtain one for me, somehow—I’d love to have old and new photos of them and their families, like the ones Sandie sent me before. I guess I’ll try and email or snail-mail Sara Karloff about pics of she & her dad. And, I’ll write to my friends (whom I haven’t seen for many years) for copies of the pictures they took on all our trips together, so I can start a NEW album.

What makes me SO ANGRY is, I could’ve brought all that stuff over to this OTHER house when we moved here 4 years ago!! I just didn’t have enough space in my small bedroom to fit the boxes of letters, cards, photos, scrapbooks, tapes & CDs, etc. Although we’re miles from the fire, THIS house almost burned down, too—we got LUCKY—the fire crews were able to get more control later in the week because of wet/cool weather these past few days……WHEW! We were packed and ready to evacuate from here if it became necessary. It’s fire season until the heavy rains come later in Fall, and it’s been the WORST drought here in decades, so we might see another fire come our way….this one’s still not completely contained, so it could jump closer to us if the wind suddenly picks up and the temps rise. YIKES!!! 😮

          Hi, Ellen.
Thank you for your prayers and concern.

          GOOD NEWS:
My boyfriend found our cat hiding behind a damaged storage container at our place. (YAY!!) She’s healthy and has been eating (probably the rodents now displaced from their underground nests), but is covered in ash. She likely has PTSD from being all alone out there during the fire, but seemed to warm-up to him again like her old self, after awhile. 🙂

The land is pretty decimated, from what he said. There are still several live trees around, however. He took a bunch of pictures, but I haven’t seen them yet. It’s kind of CREEPY to know a place I used to sleep and feel safe and comfy in, as well as all my stuff, was on FIRE….ewwww. I keep imagining all my things melting, burning and exploding, like my shoes and electronics and bath products. How SURREAL. 😮

We’re going to clean up all the junk that’s left, and might rebuild someday. The BEST thing is that we won’t have to worry about another fire coming through there again for a LOOONG time! He’s been terrified of this happening since he began building the house, back in the ’90s. Next time he builds, he’ll make some significant changes in the design and materials to make it more resistant to fire and insects.

Yeah….I think we’re all on our OWN here at The Baz, from now on. Perhaps we’ve been permanently abandoned, or BlackCatte and Neve are just too busy with work and such to continue updating this site. I sure HOPE they return, soon! 😦

I’d LOVE to start a Basil Rathbone/Vincent Price site myself, but I have NO IDEA how to begin. I’ve never even uploaded a photo, before. Plus, I have NO money to pay for the domain name or webmaster to run it for me. Whatever. If I DID start one, it would probably be a shoes/fashion/toys/candy/art & comedy blog—which ALSO happened to have a link to my SECOND site in honor of Basil and Vincent….since those are my FAVORITE things, and all. Yup. That’s what I’d do. 😉

On Saturday night, I checked-out what film was being featured on “Svengoolie” (a sort of ‘Elvira-like’ weekly show on “MeTV”, where the guy makes fun of goofy old horror/sci-fi flicks), and GUESS WHAT?? It was “Son of Frankenstein”! YEEEEES!!! That cheered me up. 🙂 Basil was SO adorable with the little boy in the movie….they had fun together, I can tell. (But, WHY did they pick a kid with an American accent to play an English couple’s son? Oh, well. They’re all supposed to be playing ‘Germans’ or something anyhow, so WHO CARES?) Although it’s a drama, EVERY time I watch that part where Baz is throwing darts with the inspector dude, I can’t help but laugh, thinking of that scene reenacted in “Young Frankenstein” with Gene Wilder. Boy, that was some GOOD STUFF!! 😀

          In Other News:

Emil Sitka’s son Saxon emailed me with his condolences over the wildfire that destroyed ALL my precious letters, cards and photos. He attached a pic of the painting I did of his dad several years ago, which he proudly has hanging in his home. I’m going to print out the emails I receive from my pen-pals and friends that are related to my fire experience, and include them in my ‘Post-Fire’ scrapbook. Then, I’ll have something NEW to read and enjoy from them. I’m beginning to feel a bit better, now. 🙂

          THANKS, Mikufan and Ellen! 🙂

I had a pretty DULL Birthday, ’cause my boyfriend was at work. So, I came-up with a NIFTY idea to entertain myself—I drew a couple colorful signs on printer paper with my markers, that said: “Yay! I’m 40 2-Day” and “1975/July 29/2015-HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”; then used my Nintendo Dsi XL to take pics of myself (wearing a T-shirt I have that happens to say: “California 1975 Surf” on it) standing in front of the signs, which I taped up on my bedroom wall next to a GIANT deflated arrow-shaped sparkly hologram metallic Birthday balloon that says: “The Party’s Here” (with the arrow pointed down at me), and my Mickey Mouse plush toys sitting on the shelf underneath. I know….pretty PATHETIC, huh? 😛

They turned-out okay, but it sure was HARD to strategically hold the Dsi at just the right angle while using the outside camera lens (so nothing’s written backwards in the pictures), without being able to see what I was doing. Funny thing is, I still LOOK like I did at 12 (only taller)!!! 😀

The day before my B-Day was my biannual dental check-up, and the day after my B-Day I had to get a small cavity filled—GOOD TIMES. 😦

HAPPY JULY 4th—YAY—IT’S INDEPENDANCE DAY!!!!! 😀
    ———————————————————————————-
(Although the date above will probably say it’s the 5th, ’cause I think it’s still set on European time.)

It also would’ve been my Grandma’s (my dad’s mom’s) 129th Birthday today; she died at 90.

I just got back from attending……THE BEST BIRTHDAY PARTY EVEEEEER!!! A friend of my boyfriend and myself celebrated his 70th with a HUGE patriotic party at his house, and we were invited. All his kids, grandkids, siblings, cousins, friends, etc. were there. After stuffing ourselves with a MEGA-DINNER, we watched him open gifts and sang him “Happy Birthday” as his cake’s candle decorations spun, opened, sparked, and played the song electronically. We then sat on the grass in his front yard and ate cake as his sons entertained us all with an HOUR-LONG FIREWORKS EXTRAVAGANZA!!

    What a GREAT DAY! 🙂

I noticed that Marcia never put up the cute Birthday icons all over her “Master of Stage and Screen” website for Basil this year, like she usually does….and Neve & BlackCatte didn’t do a special Birthday tribute for him on “The Baz” this time, EITHER. The last update done to this site was in February!

For several weeks, possibly a few MONTHS now, I’ve also noticed my comments are no longer being moderated….they’re just going up instantly. Has this been the same for everyone else out there, too?

I’m a bit worried, because it might mean something happened to the girls; or maybe they can’t always update their sites because they’re too busy—are you guys wondering the same thing?? I sure hope everything’s alright. 🙂

    * Kelpamalt weight-GAINING tablets for girls (HUH??) Weren’t most chicks ‘plump’ enough, back then?

    * Kotex sanitary napkins “for personal daintiness—the first rule of loveliness” (EW!) Wait—what does “loveliness” have to do with feminine-products related to menstruation? Guys don’t want to get NEAR chicks on their periods; it totally grosses-them-out!

    * Hush cream deodorant “to correct offensive body odors”—including “that disagreeable ‘between toes’ odor, too!” (DOUBLE-EW!!) Perhaps “Hush” should’ve taken their name more literally, when it came to advertising discretion.

And, DON’T forget to: “Wake-up” that liver bile with Calomel, and “Tint” that grey hair with Brownatone! (*__*)

        OMG—I know, right?? 😮

There’s only about 1 WEEK a month that I actually feel what could be considered ‘normal’……the rest of the time, I’m either having my pre-symptoms of depression/crying/moodiness, I’m flowing like a waterfall, or I turn into an extremely tired ‘slug’ (prior to AND during my period). When I say “extremely tired”, I mean: I go to bed feeling as if I took a sleeping pill; upon waking, I feel SUPER groggy—like the anesthetic still hasn’t quite worn-off, after an operation!

When I began menstruating (at age 13), I never used to have any symptoms at ALL—or, for many years thereafter. I’d just notice one day that—OOPS!—my period started….always when I was at school, or at some other inopportune moment/place with NO pads available, and inconveniently-soiled undies. Then, in my early 20s I saw a change in myself (several days prior to the ‘BIG P’); I displayed some slight mood-swings and sleepiness, which was no big deal. In my mid to late 20s/early 30s, I sometimes got a fever or felt like I was getting sick with the stomach flu for a day; other times, I’d just get a headache the night before ‘IT’ showed-up. But in the past few years (my late 30s), I’ve also ‘enjoyed’ the new addition of my inability to control sudden, cruel verbal-outbursts and argumentativeness toward people I care about (for NO apparent reason), and a lack of patience with others—as well as the ‘ever-so-awesome’ pre-menopausal hot-flashes, which now sporadically accompany the first signs that my ‘special visitor’ is about to arrive. Combine all this with the fact that I’ve always been a VERY HEAVY bleeder (for the first few days), and I’m the ‘happiest-camper’ in the WORLD!

        ‘THANKS’, Nature—you’re the ‘BEST’!! 😡

I’ve ALSO suffered from depression since I was 12 (which only worsens during ‘that time of month’), and I sleep a LOT because of it, already.

Boy, I hope I won’t get any WORSE once I’m actually IN menopause—YIKES!!! If that happens, my boyfriend might have to kick me out, since he already can barely stand me on my period NOW! (Hee, hee.) 😉

I remember using those dumb ‘feminine-napkin’ things (with the NOT so hygienic wannabe ‘garter-belts’) occasionally, when I was in high school (in the early 1990s)—yup, they STILL made them back then! I don’t know if they do any more, however. Gee, it sure STINKS being a girl….except for the cute clothes/shoes/accessories we get to wear—but, that’s about IT!! 🙂

      I spent Valentine’s Day ALONE. 😦

My boyfriend was gone all day doing yard-work at his other house, and stayed there overnight. We’ve never really ‘celebrated’ Valentine’s, anyways….if I’m lucky, I might get a greeting card—when he remembers. He isn’t into romance, and thinks it’s a ‘stupid’ holiday; invented as another excuse for businesses to make money off of the suckers willing to spend it on presents for their lovers. He’s kind-of right about that, but it still would be nice to receive a gift once in a while. I’m poor, so I usually just buy him some inexpensive candy, and get him (or make) a card. Since he wasn’t here, we haven’t given our cards to one another, yet. When he gets home today, he’s going to take me out to dinner to make-up for it.

      Whoopee.

      Gee, Valentine’s is the BORINGEST holiday, E V E R.

I enjoyed it MUCH more as a kid; when in school our class gave out those little Valentines with the lollipops stuck in them to each other, decorated the room with glitter-hearts we cut out of construction paper, and had a BIG party!! 🙂

Still think Baz was nominated for wrong film in 1938 that’s why he lost.Should’ve been nominated The Dawn Patrol-he’s so much better at acting-Brennan always made me queasy-now I know why.Dancing/jumping for joy at anyone’s demise, while Baz tried to encourage understanding that homosexuality was a fact of life, and to learn to accept it as a fact of life.Maybe because he was ahead of his time, that’s why Baz lost out to a lesser actor,IMHO.Love the party, can I hang w/Baz in the Kitchen?

In (belated) reply to Ellen’s comment:

You’re SO right about how most guys don’t respect us girls like they should. However; I’m kind of lucky, ’cause my boyfriend supports me. 😉

He’s the only one with a job, at this time—he even washes his laundry, cooks a lot (yay!), and does ALL the grocery shopping for both of us + buys his own clothing/shoes.

I’m VERY grateful to have someone taking care of me financially (and not to be homeless), but I’m also sad….’cause all I seem to be good for is doing his house & yard work—like I’m just the maid, ‘earning my keep’, or something—rather than being his ‘dream come true’. I believe a LOT of women have the same problem with their significant others….it’s pretty common for men to forget we’re special, and to honor us. I think that’s why we come to this blog to pine over Basil; we WISH there was a guy out there like him, who knew how to treat us like goddesses and shower us with passionate affection, even if just occasionally.

My boyfriend is a ‘modern’ man, and expects me to pay for my personal stuff (snacks, clothes, art-supplies, bathroom essentials, etc.) with money I earn myself; this is difficult for me, being an artist and not having a steady income. I understand that everything is now considered ‘equal’ between men and women these days, but I’m an ‘old-fashioned’ girl….I like being dependent on a guy, and want one who’s okay with me the way I am. Instead, he’s disappointed in me for not making more of a life for myself, or contributing monetarily to our relationship—which only leaves me feeling somewhat guilty for being ‘lazy’, and like an even BIGGER loser. 😦

Nothing wrong with holding traditional values. Was always criticized by those who judged me on basis of their own lifestyle.Had a very strict upbringing myself.

I know it’s a bit late to mention, but this would be my ULTIMATE Valentine’s Day (or Christmas, or Birthday) ‘dream-gift’, from a guy—if I had a boyfriend who actually GAVE me gifts:

Surprise-delivered to my door, beautifully packaged with a thoughtful notecard, would be…..

A fluffy-soft (pink or blue) “Hoodie-Footie” onesie from Pajamagram, and an adorable “Vermont Teddy Bear”, wearing the matching “Hoodie-Footie”….I saw them both online, and wanted them SOOOO BAD!! 😀

Guess I’ll have to keep-on dreaming.

Oh, Basil—where ART thou when I NEED thee??! 😉
