Sunday Pic #15

Thought I’d start with a lovely thing (see above) that Marcia linked to in a comment. The owner of the original is Landra, another of our readers. (Click HERE to see a larger version, where the letter is readable)

Another fabulous and funny drawing from Ireallyshould be drawing. The Baz would have approved entirely.

A cap from FictionforLife that has the beautiful play of shadow and moody atmosphere of a Rembrandt

And lastly this awesome gif from GreenishQ at Tumblr. That little smile. What a shameless hussy.

I like Autopsy of a Ghost! It’s funny and weird, and he was still hot even though he was 75!

OMG, Violet—you’re darn-right he was still HOT!!! 😀

I would’ve totally dated (and slept with) him at ANY age! Although I normally go for MUCH older guys anyhow, I believe most ladies feel the same way about the exceptional Baz as I do. What a captivating, precious soul he was—and IS. 🙂

As to “Autopsy of a Ghost”; you can see my previous comments regarding that film if you look it up in the “movies” section on this site. I don’t understand much Spanish, but it doesn’t matter……I can tell what’s going on in the story, anyway. (I REALLY wish they’d also done a version with either English subtitles, or over-dubs in English, using Basil’s and John’s actual voices—like Vincent Price did in some of his foreign-made films.) Basil doesn’t play a terribly “humiliating” role here, but more-so a lighthearted, cute and silly—and at times, even a dignified, serious and sorrowful—one.

The only thing that’s really SAD about this film, is the fact that: 1) unlike his friend John Carradine, Basil is not doing it out of pure enjoyment or “for fun”, but rather out of desperation for income; and 2) Basil’s premature death may have been directly due to his acquiring altitude-sickness during the making of this movie, because he wasn’t used to being up that high in the mountains. 😦

Can’t believe TCM has no Baz movies scheduled on his birthday. Not one single movie.Gone are the days when AMC & TCM showed his movies on that great day.If I remember correctly,TNT did at least one year, too.A bunch of pirate movies that evening, but no Captain Blood!Gotta check if they did the same for Errol’s birthday.

Sherlock Holmes we were tripping over around here.not kidding like sometimes every night for a week at a time 3 dif SH’S movies on the late show Captian Blood, Robin Hood, Court Jester, Dawn Patrol, were easy to get around here. But it took me ages to record some of the odder stuff. That I’m glad I taped because now I cant ever watch broacast TV again..unless I suddenly become rich.but oh how I love youtube.

May 27th, 2014 is a VERY special day—

      Because today’s Vincent Price’s 103rd Birthday……YAAAAAAAY!!! 🙂

I hope some of HIS movies are on, tonight. (Too bad my boyfriend’s hogging the big-screen TV watching stupid baseball, right now. Oh, well…Vincent LOVED baseball—so did Basil!)

      And let’s not forget:

HAPPY 92nd BIRTHDAY, SIR CHRISTOPHER LEE!!! 😀

Congratulations on the release of your newest HEAVY METAL album, too!!

What an AWESOME guy!! I’ll bet Vincent and Basil are SO proud of their friend…and a bit jealous they didn’t get to live as long; hee-hee! I know Chris is probably remembering Vincent today, and missing his BESTEST bud Peter Cushing, who’s 101st Birthday was yesterday. (Vincent died in 1993, and Peter in 1994—not to mention Basil’s death, in 1967—that’s a really LONG time to be without one’s dearest pals.) 😦

I was watching SpongeBob Squarepants, (Yup, I still watch it.) and I THINK I might have noticed a Captain Blood reference. Not really looking at Errol Flynn in the same light anymore. :-/ I managed to find a (Very poorly recorded with a woman talking in the background.) clip on youtube of it. I’d advise skipping to 2;18. xD

Don’t worry, Mikufan—I still watch “SpongeBob”, occasionally—and, my almost 68 year-old friend has been watching it religiously EVERY day for years (as well as “King of the Hill”)!!

He must REALLY like super-goofy cartoons……A LOT. 🙂

I too, noticed the “Captain Blood” reference thrown in there (along with the obvious “pirate” theme)—as well as that of “Night of the Living Dead”, added for good-measure; but, instead of saying “Errol Flynn”, he SHOULD have said: “Look at ME, I’m Basil Rathbone!”. That would’ve been WAY cooler.

The idea of the skeletons being dispatched by sword in this episode was probably borrowed from those old ’60s & ’70s “Sinbad”/”Jason and the Argonauts”-type movies, in which Ray Harryhausen did all the AMAZING stop-motion animation segments—with not only large groups of skeletons, but also a dragon with several heads, flying harpies, Medusa (with a head made of moving snakes) and various other extremely difficult-to-maneuver mythical creatures—boy, now THAT guy had talent!

Totally un-related but slightly interesting fact:

I watched a Joan Crawford movie on TCM yesterday called “Susan and God”, which had good ol’ Nigel Bruce in it, playing a small part as a fairly “regular” guy. Although it was a drama, he still put-on a bit of that silly persona he uses when portraying Dr. Watson…it was just part of his natural “style”, I guess.

In March, my boyfriend and I helped his family and friends put-on a HUGE surprise-party for his brother’s 60th Birthday. The room they rented for the party had a large flat-screen TV on the wall, with the SpongeBob Squarepants music-video: “Best Day Ever” playing on a loop, THE WHOLE TIME!!! Me and all the kids there kept dancing around and singing the chorus-part over and over and OVER again, and probably drove everyone else INSANE………it was GREAT!! 🙂

In honor of today (May 27th) being both Vincent Price’s AND Christopher’s Lee’s Birthdays, let’s ALL sing-along with SpongeBob, everybody! 😀

          (I’m sure they’ll just LOVE it.) 😉

  6. Neve, it’s great to see you back!!! My regular Baz fix has been suffering something awful.

I can’t tell you how honored I feel to have my letter in the Sunday Pic! Marcia’s link to a copy that you can blow up and read in it’s entirety is http://www.basilrathbone.net/letters/Basil%20letter%20to%20Mr.%20Brandt.jpg. A true hyperlink is in Marcia’s comment in “Fight Your Husband & Win Success”. BR’s handwriting is actually legible for a change.

The gif is absolutely to die for! How can one man be so gorgeous in virtually anything he does!?!

Please everyone, feel free to call me by my first name “Landra” instead of that nonsensical moniker Gravatar gave me.

BTW—for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, his performance in “Make a Wish” showcases Basil realistically as his MOST natural, delightful (and sexy) self! *sigh* 🙂

It’s not too silly or overdone, although there’s a lot of singing and stuff in it, since it’s a musical. I like the simplicity of the storyline, and the other actors’ performances, as well. The music is pretty good, too. It does drift-away from Basil’s character for a while during the middle of the film, but comes back to him, eventually……which is, of course, what ALL OF US want—especially when he’s wearing those somewhat casual, “shabby” clothes of his!! 😉
