Sunday Pic #14

Marcia has suggested this pic, partly because of its prettiness and partly on the off chance anyone can tell us anything about its origin. The dedication reads “to Sophie, thank you for your beautiful work. Basil Rathbone/Christmas 1929“. B is obviously in some kind of costume, but for what? The only movie he made that year was THE LAST OF MRS CHEYNEY, but he doesn’t wear anything like this Spanish-type deal in that. So…what is it? Any clues or suggestions welcome. Meantime, admire…

(And apologies for comments having been turned off much of the time over Thanksgiving. They are back on properly now).

      Honstly I’m not mysterious and I have no secret idenity. I’m a plain old ordnary civil war renenactor from the midwest. Who cant spell for s$*t. My first name is..shhh… big secret… Donna. the Countess part is a heredtiory title passed down from my 3rd great grandmother.

    Wasn’t this a costume from “The Masked Bride,” in which he was an “Apache” dancer? ( And why are gypsy dancers called Apache dancers anyhow?)

          Gee……last night I dreamt that Basil was in my living room (he was in his early to mid 50’s, or so), watching TV with me and my family, as a guest at my parents’ house.

          We were watching a show on the History Channel about some horrible event that occurred during WWII, or something—where people burned alive on a ship that was being bombed and caught fire, and they were running around screaming and couldn’t get away, as hot fuel and oil was pouring onto them and stuff…there was even FOOTAGE of it taken from the planes above—ewww. Basil was sitting there on the couch, kind-of staring blankly at the screen; you know, that “I’m remembering things I don’t want to, but can’t help it” stare. He was holding his little 1940’s-style transistor radio, listening to strange modern symphonic music with original WWI battlefield sound-recordings (of bombs, explosions, etc.) as part of the song.

          Man, talk about re-living a NIGHTMARE!! 😮

          Basil went out the back door onto our porch for a moment (presumably to smoke, or maybe even cry), and I was telling my mom about him having issues with PTSD. Just as he re-entered the living room and sat down, I was saying to her: “He’s still being tormented by something that happened long ago and far away” (referencing his WWI experiences—NOT “Star-Wars”!).

          Then, after the TV show ended, he wanted to leave, and began folding-up the antenna on his pocket-radio…the tip was bent in half, and I said “Oh, yours is broken TOO, huh?”, to which he nodded. I asked if he wanted me to tape it together like I did to mine (I had a broken antenna on my real-life radio, and fixed it with tape), but he shook his head “no”.

          That’s when the dream ended.

          I wanted him to stay, so I could talk to him about how he felt regarding his war-trauma, and what he was going through. I knew he REALLY needed someone who would listen and understand—so he didn’t have to deal with it all alone.

          Hopefully he’ll return in my NEXT dream, so we can have that conversation! 🙂

            Sheesh Baz, Gretchen offered to fix your antenna for you, don’t be all grumpy because yours is broken and Gretchen’s isn’t! *Sniff* I don’t know, dead movie stars these days.

    Sigh…so the comments are still not working it seems. I can approve a whole bunch of them – but then they just don’t appear. Sometimes they vanish completely and I can’t find them at all, sometimes they are in some limbo – approved but still invisible. Who knows what is going on. I don’t think it’s my incompetence, but apologies anyways.

    How bout a costume party..they were just always giving them or going to them.Christmas is a party season.Of course just becaues it says Christmas dosent mean the pic was taken at Christmas.Not Last Of Mrs Cheney,not the version I saw unless TMC or was it AMC[?] cut that part out. oh and almost forgot..WOW.

      Countess,I bet you’re right about a costume party,exactly what I was thinking when I 1st saw this pic.Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving,and enjoyed the long holiday weekend.Don’t know who Sophie could be,but,another mystery for Sherlock,please have mussier hair,BR,the lookis great on you!

          Was just thinking after reading about Nigella Lawson’s supposed addictions,good thing Baz wasn’t doing “the dust” in OR’s wild spending days,which would get preference in finances,his recreational usage or OR’s need for clothes/hairdos/whatever else she could think of to waste money-need to heat home,light up a bankroll.Man,she had some serious mental health issues,where’s Monk’s psychiatrist when ya need him?Still,my sympathies with him,she made her bed and refused to lay with him.She’s like many other Catholics who give up sex past childbearing years,so he may have remained devoted to her,but at what a cost in physical & mental health for him.Sorry for my rant.
