I know there are other Ida Lupino fans here, so you better run over to Youtube asap and watch this documentary about her. It’s very rare because she was very private and left very little personal information.

OMG. Look what else I found. Ida and Basil in WUTHERING HEIGHTS on radio! I’m crying. I’m so happy. It’s from 1940, so after they were in THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES together.

Baz & Ida should’ve been perfect in Frenchman’s Creek, maybe as Dona and Rock (as he played in film).

Boy i agree with her statement ..but how many of us actuly get to do the work we WANT to? I dont i work for bread and payments. But 1 time a year i get to do a job i like.Acting.The reason I do reenacting is it feeds that empty hole inside of me.I can be an actress a costuem designer and a singer at events. But i get up in the am and go to work for a paycheck.Bet she felt like that to.Any job you dont WANT to do isnt a calling it’s work.

I agree completely. I go to work because I have to pay the bills and keep a roof over my head. I think people who can get paid for doing what they love are really lucky.

She’s entirely correct though (Ida I mean). We should be able to do the work we want. So much human potential must currently be wasted serving functions that are not needed. The world is just not rational in its use of human resources. Ida herself spent very little time doing work she wanted to do.

Yeah the website uses frames, which means each page loads inside the same URL. Slightly old fashioned and also annoying. Countess is correct BTW – the pic you come to on that link is pretty graphic and gruesome. So viewer discretion is advised

I actually live in Balham, so I’ll try and elucidate. It’s complicated. Balham is a quite loosely defined area of London and is part of both a portion of Clapham and Wandsworth, so the different terminologies just reflect the loose geography. Hendrick Ave is probably in Balham, in Clapham, and in Wandsworth. Though most of Clapham is actually in Lambeth. (I told you it was complicated). Balham has been gentrified now, of course, and is full of lawyers (like me) but in the 1920s I am not sure how wealthy it was. How well off was Edgar in later life? Did he have to live off a pension or was he getting an income from his very VERY wealthy family? If not, I wonder why not?

Thanks Claud! Well not sure what mineing enginers made cir turn of the cent I’ll have to recheck cencus to see if it says how much prop is worth.or if says how much money the person has. in USA some cences [taken every 10 year here] say some dont. I doubt they would live in a dump. He had enough money to send at least 2 of the kids to privet school[guessing Repton is a privet school.] How close are you to 24 Hendrick? what does the place look like now? I tryed to google it one time came up with nothing. Is that just 1house or an apt? or what on brit comes they call simi detached? How far from GreenBank Cottage is it? How far from Repton? Inquireing minds want to know.

Countess, go to basilrathbone.net to see pics of 24 Hendrick today (courtesy of Google maps) and a map of England that shows the locations of Repton and Liverpool (where Greenbank cottage is) in relation to London. Thanks for confirming that 24 Hendrick was Basil’s parent’s home. So I wonder where he lived with Marion and baby Rodion.

So, he and Ouida spent the whole summer in the same house, but she wouldn’t stay in the same hotel as him before they were married because she didn’t believe in sex before marriage?
I wonder if that whole no sex before marriage was just added to Basil’s memoirs by Ouida because she thought it made her seem more classy.

“No sex BEFORE marriage”?? Heck, Basil and Ouida never had sex AFTER marriage!! (Well…sometimes they did; if he bribed her first.) 😉

Sure! ^_^
My Nan has pretty good psychic abilities, and when I said about visiting Basils old place she told me she had a feeling about number 27.
So me and my Mum went there the other day for a look around, and I felt like someone kept staring at me, and then it stopped really suddenly, right outside of number 27. :3
My Mum was pretty freaked out by it, and the Policeman who was stood there (Tony Blair lives in the square and the Policeman keeps watch outside of his house) kept giving us strange looks, (Not surprising since we’d been staring at number 27 for a good few minutes 😀 ) so we started walking away, and the feeling came back, only this time I also had the feeling somebody was actually stood on the side of the road watching me.
…..So either I’m suffering from some sort or paranoia, or something strange happened to me. (Or perhaps where my Nan actually said number 27 I sort of tricked myself into thinking everything)
