Sunday Pic #9: slashy Zorro

A couple more pics that readers have asked me to feature. Being gorgeously colorized “collages” from THE MARK OF ZORRO. Scenes that some think ought to have been in the movie. Let’s be honest, we’d rather watch these two than one-step-up-from-actual-wallpaper Linda Darnell wouldn’t we.

Yes we would.

I’m not sure if the person who sent them to me also made them – but thanks to Avocado. 🙂

I don’t want to “trash” Alyssia, but I do wonder if she’s actually very young. I remember as a young teen idolizing Errol Flynn before I learned all about his “wicked ways” and being in denial of his flaws.

Basil, on the other hand, was not “wicked” but very human, and I must admit, the more I learn about him, the more I respect and admire him. Reading his wartime letters and other personal letters posted here have given me a deeper understanding of who he was and a sense of warmth and compassion for him. In a way, I’m also a bit put off by the sexual bantering, fun as it is, because it objectifies him, in the same way a woman might be objectified for her breasts or other aspects of her figure. What makes him a beautiful man is the whole “package” not just the “package.”

But then guys have been objectifying us for so long it’s nice to be able to return the complement. In my mom’s generation nice girls weren’t supposed to notice a guy’s body or comment on his cute ass or whatever. We were supposed to like men for their minds alone 😆 I don’t see it as devaluing a guy to notice he has a great bod.

OMG…I SAW JOHN INMAN IN PERSON IN 1997, WHEN HE WAS SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS AT (THE PBS STATION) KTEH CHANNEL 54’S “STORE OF KNOWLEDGE”, IN SAN JOSE!! 🙂

My family and I were REALLY into watching reruns of “Are You Being Served?” in the ’90s. Upon discovering John would be visiting the newly-opened store near our area, my oldest brother and I decided to go. It was about an hour away, but it was WORTH it! When we got there, HUNDREDS of people were lined-up outside the mall, ALL the way up the steps to the store…the line was JUST for autographs! We weren’t there for that; we just wanted to SEE him and shop, so we walked PAST everybody and went into the store— hey, it sure beats waiting in line all day! (Good thing, too, since he had to leave after a few hours, and there was STILL a line down to the parking-lot that missed-out!) While my brother and I checked-out all the NEAT science toys and doodads, and browsed through the books about the making of series’ like “Masterpiece Theater” and “Nova”, and the collection of videos of “Mr. Bean”, “The Black Adder”, and “Sherlock Holmes”, we were also SPYING on John Inman as he stood behind a desk talking to his fans! He looked so TIRED, and I hoped one of the bodyguards or somebody would give him a chair, but that didn’t happen. He was also probably still recovering his strength from his recent illness, at the time. (He’d almost DIED from I believe double-pneumonia, or something like that, and had been in the hospital for several WEEKS…the KTEH channel 54 fans had even sent him a GIANT signed get-well card, which he really appreciated.)

After THAT, we went to the “Winchester Mystery House”, but didn’t want to pay for the home-tour ’cause we’re CHEAP, so we hung-out at the gift-shop, instead— even IT’S haunted!! All-in-all, it was a GREAT day…what’s this got to do with Basil Rathbone, you ask?? Well, NOTHING! Unless you count the fact that it was a PBS store, and they sometimes play his old movies; or perhaps because PBS made the “Sherlock Holmes” series with Edward Hardwicke— and Basil was in Sherlock Holmes movies and knew Ed and his dad Sir Cedric…just SAYIN’, there’s SORT-OF a connection!

Hi, Hally! Sorry you aren’t familiar with “Are You Being Served?”…It’s a ’70s and ’80s British-comedy TV series, which PBS stations purchased and re-aired in the ’90s, and I believe, up-to the present. It was quite popular in England, and gained a large following here in the States, as well. (There was even a follow-up series made in the ’90s, called “Are You Being Served? Again!”, with most of the original cast reprising their roles. It only lasted a season, or two, however.)

The show was set in an upscale department store, and the entire series took place on the floor that sold men’s and women’s clothing, and lingerie. John Inman, whom I wrote about in my previous comment, played a campy, witty tailor/salesman in the men’s department. The show’s title was the question asked of any customer in the shop, as they browsed around, by a sales-clerk. There were various other great actors who also played salespeople, as well as the maintenance-man and the store manager.

You should look-it-up on Wikipedia, as there is much more information about it, and the second series, as well as the actors…sadly, John Inman passed-away in 2007, after having suffered for several years with lung infections, finally succumbing to hepatitis A.

Upon reading several pages of these blogs, I’ve noticed something. This is just MY personal opinion, but it seems Alyssia may have an unrealistic view of both Basil and Ouida, in which she truly feels they were incapable of being imperfect, somehow. She sees them as almost infallible, idyllic— one reason Basil HATED playing Holmes…”his consistent infallibility, his inability to be human, to make mistakes like the rest of us”. (For instance; when a person is a love-addict, they tend to put their beloved on a pedestal…they can “do no wrong”. They cannot see the imperfections, the problems, the annoying things that can make or break a healthy relationship. These poor souls miss-out on knowing the real, ACTUAL person they love, and can’t face the fact that this person might have done something wrong, once. It “blemishes” them, taking away their fantastic notion of that “perfect” mate.) Similarly, this is what I’ve noticed in every post from Alyssia— always “defending” Basil and Ouida against any thought of possible sexual misdeeds and/or other bad behaviors throughout their lives together, and apart. It’s as though they MUST be as pure and innocent as snow, they couldn’t possibly have done any of those terrible things; and anyone who says they did is automatically a LIAR. If someone mentions that Basil is “sexy” in a photo and what they’d like to do with him, she says they are labeling him, or dishonoring him in some other “perverted” way— in other words, “how DARE you defile this saintly man?”. Dude. The guy had a PENIS and used it, like everyone else on this planet…uh-oh— I’ll bet he even had nasty thoughts about a girl once or twice, too! (SHEESH!!) She blatantly refuses to go along with all the known, documented facts about Basil and Ouida, including letters HE wrote himself, and invents her own version of the events as SHE perceives them…including that probably fake “diary” she supposedly has. I don’t know if she is just trolling, but I REALLY hope so…otherwise, she may have some SERIOUS mental issues. Like I said…JUST MY OPINION.

I have stated many times on this board I do NOT think Basil to be gay! I think he’s about as manly a man as there ever was.Ty acts gay in the movie because he is suppousd to. Actuly I dont think he is suppoused to be gay as much as he is suppoused to be a sissy. I also think the pic of Ty and Basil looking at each other looks that way because in the orignal shot Basil is looking a Gail Sonderguard[sp?].And he spent half the movie learing at her.Truthfully I’m not interested enough in Ty Power to care if he likes men or women. But I will say I think in Razors Edge he was much more manly then this pic.
