Sherlock at Christmas
An episode of THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES broadcast live 67 years ago on Monday December 24 1945.
It’s kinda silly, but I love the immediacy of these old radio shows – the “liveness” with all the fluffs and mistakes preserved forever, and the ad hoc theatrical feeling (when some carol singers are needed in the background at one point, you can hear one of them is Nigel Bruce). And we get the Baz doin’ a bit of the ole Cockney.
It also features one of the best lines Sherlock ever had to utter – “when I shout ‘Merry Christmas’ I want you all to whip out your truncheons” –
Well, naturally.

Lovely – and there’s a Basil/Sherlock marathon on TCM
When? Not around here — I’m stuck with f….ing Andy Hardy
TCM UK ha been running Basil/Holmes for the last few days
I’m renouncing my American citizenship today!
Is that your trunchent in your pocket or are you just happy to see me…{see Thin Blue Line for refrence}
What fun! I think Basil enjoyed doing the radio Holmes more than the films. I wonder what they did after the broadcast. I imagine Basil and Nigel hanging out together. And of course Ouida must have had a Christmas party planned. And Cynthia was six that year – so a great age for Santa and everything.
I can picture the drinks being knocked back, the stories of the war from Baz and Willie, the jokes.Baz reading A Christmas Carol to the kids at some point and pure joy all around.
It does sound so immediate doesn’t it, you can almost imagine you’e listening to a live broadcast
Lovely and Christmassy
Oh this made me nostalgic. I wish I’d been around when Basil and Nigel were doing these.
Read somewhere they’d throw jelly donuts at the window of the engineer’s booth. Am still saving this broadcast to hear…maybe for New Year’s. Think I heard it many years ago. Does anyone remember the “Tales of Fatima” broadcasts? Have been only able to find one (years ago), but I may have a list of the entire run of titles, if it’s on online here somewhere (most everything is, after all). I do remember as a little tot hearing the title on the big family Philco radio–and thinking it was a religious show! (Stoopid kid.)
No but we had a big record set of Holmes, some sponcered by Petrie[sp?] wine some by Bromo Quine Cold Tablets. I havent been able to get this to play is it the one where they sing Good King Wencilus?
Wonder what Mary Gordon had to say about working with Baz and Willie.Ida Lupino said she enjoyed working on The Adventures and teasing Baz Bathrug.Martin Kosleck loved working with him and his work ethic.Kosleck’s lover was one of the cast.Maybe Baz reluctant to do The Heiress after subconsciously regretting Hollywood-separation.Can’t believe wifey willinly left Hollywood behind.Always thought she was divorced when she met Baz.There was no secret he was still married.Still don’t know why Jack Miltern with her if there was no romantic interest,as Baz had originally thought. And her insulting Jack as being old enough to be her grandfather. And later in years, saying she never went for the he-man type. She just went for the meal ticket.
If Basil was a “meal-ticket”. She ate pretty dang good!
Don’t think she ever had to eat turnips again with Baz around.
With God as my witness…said Ouida Ohara. Holding her sterling silver tea service in the air..
God Bless us everyone.Raising silver tea service
Terrific fun and they sound like they are enjoying themselves!
This is so great, you can imagine the already hitting the Christmas cheer just a tad!
Silly ep – but lovely too! Nigel Bruce was everyone’s uncle
