June is a MASSIVE month for us…

June 13th will be Basil’s 121st birthday!

And THE BAZ will be one year old on June 30th!

Of course there will be a HUGE party.

And cake…

What else should we do? Any thoughts on a great way to celebrate?

Nunc Dimittis for Gisborne

What I like most about this, apart from the music, is the gorgeous b/w stills. So crisp and modern-seeming. It’s also nice to have a tribute to the passing of poor Sir Guy. When I was a kid it always bothered me that no one seemed to mourn him in the end.

I’m also launching THE BAZ on Youtube. I have so many of his movies and other goodies, many of which are public domain now, I thought it would be good to have a proper place to put them. So, “NUNC DIMITTIS FOR GISBORNE” and Hally’s lovely Sherlock Holmes video are the first offerings. :)

Come and subscribe! And if you have any vids you think belong on BR’s channel, then let send ‘em over.

BTW – it’s worth watching this in HD if you can.

A Geek Bearing Gifs…

A reader called Margie reminded me about these lovely gifs done by MarionDavies on Tumblr. I probably don’t need to say they are from THE LAST OF MRS CHEYNEY, B’s first talkie and a huge hit in 1929. Ought to have been the start of a terrific movie career, if fate had been a little kinder to him…

No, never mind the sad reflection, just enjoy the prettiness…

basilrathbone.net on Ouida Bergere

Basilrathbone.net has just unveiled a new page dedicated to Rathbone’s troubling second wife, Ouida Bergere (or whatever he real name was).

basilrathbone.net/biography/ouida.htm

Go and check it out. Lots of info. I focused on this pic of Ouida in 1919, sitting in a huge car:

She would have been married to George Fitzmaurice at the time I think, and had just launched her short-lived multi-functional uber-agency for just about everything. That giant car is so Ouida isn’t it. Wonder if she ever actually managed to pay for it

Sunday Pic – slashy Zorro

Hey guys – couple more pics that readers have asked me to feature. Being gorgeously colorized “collages” from THE MARK OF ZORRO. Scenes that some think ought to have been in the movie. Let’s be honest, we’d rather watch these two than one-step-up-from-actual-wallpaper Linda Darnell wouldn’t we.

Yes we would.

I’m not sure if the person who sent them to me also made them – but thanks to Avocado. :)

Edit for update to include this lovely enlargement sent in by Hot Chick:

the curious incident of the vanishing moth holes

So, here’s a funny thing. Two versions of the Basil/Livvy pic have now come into my possession. This one, which we published here a short while ago….

And this one, see if you can spot the diff…. :)

Mothy sweater, or non-mothy sweater? Wonder which is real and who changed it. Maybe a publicity guy at Warner’s thought the holes were just too Boho for comfort.

Or then again – maybe the two shots are really seconds apart and between them an enraged Ouida attacked Basil with a pair of scissors. :)

BTW, The Baz now has over 1,000 followers! Yay.

Wednesday Pics

Hey guys. I’ve been away from all things Baz. Visiting Snowdonia and the Giant’s Causeway and other cool stuff. Britain is fantastic. So small, but so much going on :)

Anyhow, I’m easing my way back into blogging with a picture post. I get sent a lot of photos by readers, most of which I already know, some of which are new to me. Here are a couple that are new to me and/or especially charming or curious.

First up – a still from that amazing weep-fest A NOTORIOUS AFFAIR. Kay Fwancis is looking vampish and intoxicated. She and B have a ton of chemistry in that film, but we are reliably informed Kay doesn’t list him as one of her lovers in her highly explicit diary. So, it was strictly an on-screen thing.

Second – Baz as Robert Browning in THE BARRETTS OF WIMPOLE STREET, one of the repertory of plays performed in the legendary 1934 national tour of the Cornell-McClintick company. Orson Welles was also in the company, played Occi in BARRETTS and Tybalt in ROMEO & JULIET.

Lastly – this lovely cap from DAWN PATROL. Like a monochrome Rembrandt.
